I stumbled across some old Roxette videos on YouTube... holy hell they were good! They prove that all awesome pop-rock music comes from Sweden. I am totally in love with these guys again.
Their wikipedia has some interesting facts about them- for example, they tried for a good five years to break into the US market, to no avail. How did they get in? An American exchange student from MINNEAPOLIS brought their single for "The Look" from Sweden to KDWB (that shitty pop station we have here). KDWB started playing it, people started calling in saying "What was that???" And they passed the tape on to other radio stations. This was all before "The Look" had even been released in the US. So yay for the strong Minnesota-Scandinavia ties.
Here are their four number one hits:
"The Look"
"Joyride"
"Listen to Your Heart"
"It Must Have Been Love"

Paper Planes :: I'm From Barcelona

Welcome to Stree-Free Tuesdays - The Vodka 7 to Your Manic Mondays.
The following song is by a group called I'm From Barcelona. IFB got their start in 2005 and since then have been traversing the world with, at times, more than 20 different instrumentalists at a time.

Emanuel Lundgren is the leader of the group (and is sorta creepy looking w/his man 'stache)

but you can meet the rest of them HERE.
Anyway, I keep hearing this song on 89.3 The Current and it always leaves me feeling happy. I like that it's catchy and I like that it incorporates the clarinet - my first instrument. I also find the video to be pretty fun as well - lots of things happening in that elevator!
So, I hope y'all enjoy your Stress-Free Tuesday...Meggo-Style.
The end.
Love,
Meggo
Paper Planes :: I'm From Barcelona
Surrounded by strangers
Their sounds and their changes
There's a big old man
In his underpants
He plays the clarinet every night
Trying hard to figure it out
In the flat above
They are making love
I guess they'll have a beautiful son
Practicing as much as they've done
Paper planes!
Folding paper planes
Throwing paper planes
To clear my head
In the flat below
There's the Cosby show
And Theodor is screaming at Bill
Claire is mad and Ruby is ill
There's a cat out there
Running everywhere
Chasing all the girls in the park
I wish that I could see in the dark
Paper planes!
Folding paper planes
Throwing paper planes
To clear my head
Paper planes!
Folding paper planes
Throwing paper planes
And go to bed
I'm surrounded by strangers
Their sounds and their changes

True To Me :: Metro Station

8:00 AM
Actually, as I write this blog, I am starting to reflect on what kinds of music I listen to during the different seasons and it's sorta funny and predictable...Spring/Summer time = happy fun dance around rockin music...Fall/Winter = slower, calm, folky music.
ANYWAY....
Metro Station is pretty sweet. They're relatively new, and sweet combo of electronic and pop. Plus, two of the band members have an odd connection...Trace Cyrus and Mason Musso are the older siblings of Miley Cyrus and Mitchel Musso (who star in the Disney show Hannah Montana)...seems like the Cyrus siblings are having a better go a the music industry than their pops - and that's totally fine by me :) I dig their music more than i dig country, so hurray for that.
Oddly enough, Metro Station will be touring on the Soundtrack of Your Summer tour (I just looked this up and got creeped out that the reference to Summer...). So, with all this neat-o background info, here's another song from Metro Station!
Enjoy.
The end.
<3,
Meggo.
True To Me::Metro Station
She turned me on
But now I'm shaking
She shoots it in
And I keep taking
They don't see
She's down with me tonight
(Time to push off)
She's such a rush
She's such a crush
She's one in a million
She's such a rush
Can't get enough
She's pumping through my veins
She's too fun to be so gone with me
Too good to be true to me
She's over my head
She's all I need
I'm so strung out
She's out of my league
They don't see
She's down with me tonight
(Time to push off)
She's such a rush
She's such a crush
She's one in a million
She's such a rush
Can't get enough
She's pumping through my veins
She's too fun to be so gone with me
Too good to be true to me
Oh, oh, she's too good to be true
I'm hooked up and ? too
Can't you see she's the sweat on the sheets?
Can't you see she's all that I need?
Can't you see she's all that I see?
She's such a rush
She's such a crush
She's one in a million
She's such a rush
Can't get enough
She's pumping through my veins
She's too fun to be so gone with me
Too good to be true to me
Too good to be true to me
Too good to be true to me
Bonus Song!!!! This one goes out to Kelsey :)

Shake It :: Metro Station

This song goes out to all present (and past, and future I suppose) members of Luther College Pride in all it's incarnations (Aware, GLBTA Flag). If you were fortunate enough to either attend the MBLGTACC conference in a car of Luther kids, or if got to shake your booty at Drag Ball 2008 "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," you have probably heard this song before. Or you might just be really cool and on top of your music.
Metro Station are a myspace success story. Founding members Trace Cyrus and and Mason Musso actually recruited Blake Healy and Anthony Improgo through myspace, and then they quickly climbed to the top of the myspace unsigned band's charts. Columbia's Walking Eye program found them through myspace, and signed them shortly after. Since then they've toured with Cobra Starship, and opened for Panic at the Disco.
This particular track was an iTunes free song of the week back in October, and as anyone familiar with apple can figure out, any group that gets selected to have an iTunes free song of the day is probably going to hit it big shortly after that. (Feist, Yael Naim, countless other songs used in apple ads and given away as free tracks of the week).
As I mentioned earlier, it's been a big hit with certain Luther folk this semester, and has made it into the coveted top five of my "Getting Ready in the Morning" playlist. So without further ado, Metro Station's "Shake It"
Let's drop!
Yeah, come on
I'll take you home
If you don't leave me at the front door
(Leave me at the front door)
Your body's cold
But girl, we're gettin' so warm
And I was thinking of ways
That I could get inside
(Get inside)
Tonight you're falling in love
Let me go now
This feeling's tearing me up
Here we go now
Chorus
Now if she does it like this
Will you do it like that?
Now if she touches like this
Will you touch her like that?
Now if she moves like this
Will you move her like that?
Come on, shake, shake
Shake, shake, shake it
Shake, shake
Shake, shake, lets shake it
Shake, shake,
Shake, shake, lets shake it
Shake, shake,
Shake, shake, lets shake it
Shake, shake,
Shake, shake, lets shake it
Your lips tremble
But your eyes are in a straight stare
(In a straight stare)
We're on the bed
But your clothes are laying right there
And I was thinking of places
That I could hide
(I could hide)
Tonight you're falling in love
Let me go now
This feeling's tearing me up
Here we go now
Chorus
I saw you dancing
And I couldn't get you off my mind
I could tell that you could tell
That I was taking my time
But I was thinking of ways
To get you to stay tonight
Body's shaking
Tell me off so I can turn off the lights
Chorus

Where Does My Heart Beat Now :: Celine Dion

not many people know this, but i have a secret love for Celine Dion...
she is absolutely magical and sometimes, only Celine can move me to tears, not to mention...there are moments in my life that i have found to be unmistakably marked by her music. something terrible or wonderful (usually an extreme emotion attached to an event in time) will happen and a Celine song will pop into my head. today is one of those days...i started my daily routine of finding all my daily necessities...like my backpack, granola bars, books, computer, keys, ipod...wait. where is it? what the fuck did i do w/my ipod? it's not in it's usual space! ok...think, think, think...where did i last have it...i had it when i went to work sunday morning...then i took it off, wrapped the headphones around it, and put it in my bag and went to work. look in your work bag. it's gotta be in there! nope. not there. not. there. at. all. that was the last time i had it. that's the last time i saw my baby. my true love. my everything.
[enter random Celine song...] this was the first song that came into my brain as i frantically searched my house to no avail. so, i share my loss with you all on this rainy, windy, cold ass day in the district of columbia...and i share my heartache with the sweet, velvety croonings of ms. dion [if you're nasty].
i've already decided that i must go in search of a much more different ipod, but i will take the day to mourn the loss of the one i shared a relationship with for the last year and a half...i started my graduate program with her and i am so sad she will not see me graduate, but maybe somewhere, somehow, she'll just know...and she'll play the right song for that day and that time and that mood...just for me...she will know what to do, just like celine knows the depths of my sorrow...the end. <3, meggo.
Where Does My Heart Beat Now::Celine Dion
So much to believe in - We were lost in time
Everything I needed
I feel in your eyes
Always tought of keepin-
Your heart next to mine
But now that seems so far away
Don't know how love could leave
Without a trace
Where do silent hearts go?
Where does my heart beat now
Where is the sound
That only echoes through the night
Where does my heart beat now
I can't live without
Without feeling it inside
Where do all the lonely hearts go
Candle in the water - Drifting helplessly
Hiding from the thunder-
Come and rescue me
Driven by hunger -
Of the endless dream
I'm searching for the hand that I can hold
I'm reaching for the arms that let me know
Where do silent hearts go?
Where does my heart beat now
Where is the sound
That only echoes through the night
Where does my heart beat now
I can't live without
Without feeling it inside
Where do all the lonely hearts go
Where do all the lonely hearts go
Then one touch overcomes the silence
Love still survives
Two hearts needing one another
Give me wings to fly
Where does my heart beat now
Where is the sound
That only echoes through the night
Where does my heart beat now
I can't live without
Without feeling it inside
I've got someone to give my heart to
Feel it getting stronger and stronger
And stronger
And I feel inside
Hearts are made to last
Till the end of time

Big Girl :: Mika

This week, I'm going to write about one of my favorite performers, Mika. He is so sweet and nice and cute and funny and... okay, maybe I have a little crush on him. He's a fascinating guy with a fascinating story- he is generally considered to be queer, yet he refuses to discuss his private life because he feels that his sexuality cannot be defined in conventional terms. He was born in Beirut, to a Lebanese mother and an American father. They fled the war and went to Paris, where Mika lived until he was 11. Then his family moved to London, where he is mainly based now.
His songs are goofy and funny and generally pretty joyous. In this song, he celebrates women of size and shape:
Here's a clip from Mika's show at First Ave last Wednesday. The two "big girls" are fans from Minneapolis!

Walks into the room
Feels like a big balloon
I said, 'Hey girls you are beautiful'
Diet coke and a pizza please
Diet coke I'm on my knees
Screaming 'Big girls you are beautiful'
You take your skinny girl
Feel like I'm gonna die
'Cause a real woman
Needs a real man here's why
You take your girl
And multiply her by four
Now a whole lot of woman
Needs a whole lot more
Get yourself to the Butterfly Lounge
Find yourself a big lady
Big boy come on around
And they'll be calling you baby
No need to fantasize
Since I was in my braces
A watering hole
With the girls around
And curves in all the right places
Big girls you are beautiful
Big girls you are beautiful
Big girls you are beautiful
Big girls you are beautiful

I Don't Know if She's Worth 900 Kronor :: Jens Lekman

8:00 AM

I fell in love over the weekend. With Jens Lekman.
About a month ago, I was told I would love him and should check him out, and the circumstances of this conversation were such that I believed it. So, I had him on my "must check out" list. Then, as it happened, his music found me before I had the chance to find it. During a rollicking Jameson-soaked cribbage extravaganza that crept from Saturday into Sunday, Jens Lekman made himself known. In those early morning hours, Lake Calhoun was foggy, so was I, and I promptly turned over my heart to the songs of a Swedish crooner.
Jens, your music makes my heart ache, my eyes brighten, my spirit sparkle. Sigh.
His songs are pure, sweeping pop; romantic and nostalgic, bouncing from melancholy to joyous and back again. And his voice is like velvet. And he plays the ukelele! Jens is a little elusive; he doesn't have a myspace profile, and despite the fact that he has released mutliple albums and EPs, his music is not all over the internet. His website, however, has some for free download (check it!). While I've only heard a handful of his songs, almost every one I've heard I L-O-V-E. Where have I been? How did I overlook Jens Lekman all these years? WTF?!?!!! There is no going back now.
This song is called "I Don't Know if She's Worth 900 Kronor" and I've listened to it the most obsessively for the last 3 days. I can't find an MP3 to embed, nor is there any YouTube video, so follow this link and stream it: CLICK TO LISTEN!!!!!!!
Oh Jens. I look forward to our polyamorous romance, I know you have a lot of admirers, but that's okay. You have so much music I have yet to submerge myself in...how exciting.
LYRICS:
Well I know that I fall in love too easy,
I just sit back and pluck a little daisy.
Oh loves me, loves me not,
I wanna fill her heart with forget-me-nots
So she'll think of me,
In Barcelona.
I don't know if she's worth 900 Kronor,
'Cause that's a ticket from Gothenburg to Barcelona.
Oh loves me, loves me not,
I wanna fill her heart with forget-me-nots
So she'll think of me,
In Barcelona.
But there's a song on the radio
that lets me know that what I feel is a
No, no, no!
But hey let's go.
I'm not afraid to lend my heart out to a stranger:
Barcelona.
Oh please don't remind me of the little time i have known her.
She's probably happy,
In love with someone in Barcelona.
But no matter, if she loves me not,
I wanna fill her heart with forget-me-nots
So she'll think of me,
In Barcelona.
But there's a song on the radio
that lets me know that what I feel is a
No, no, no!
But hey let's go.
I'm not afraid to lend my heart out to a stranger:
Barcelona.

If You're Into It :: Flight of the Conchords

My first post of the new year! Let's start 2008 with a laugh, shall we?
So, you know when you are
kind of into someone and you kind of let them know by saying something about hanging out again, or whatever, and you follow it up with a, "Well, you know, if you want to, I mean, if you're into it..."
Yeah. Smooth. I think we've all probably awkwardly thrown that out there at some point. Truly the ultimate follow up to whatever suggestion you make, "if you're into it" hints at what you want to do, but passively lets you off the hook and puts the responsibility on the other person. It shows how, um, laid back, casual and easy going you are (trying to seem). Not into it? No worries, you weren't that into in either anyway (lie!). Into it? Everybody wins (yes, they are into it!). Right? Uh, yeah...
So, now, enter "If You're Into It", from Flight of the Conchords. It just kills me! This song is guaranteed to make me laugh, for oh-so-many reasons. Flight of the Conchords is a pop/folk/comedy duo out of New Zealand, and they are fantastic and hilarious. They parody a variety of musical genres and their lyrics are wacky. The best part is that they are actually great musicians. In addition to albums and funny music videos and live music/comedy shows and a radio show, these guys also have a self-titled TV show on HBO. Busy little beavers, they are. Check out the song and get ready to smile.

Lyrics!
If you want me to
I could hang 'round with you
If I only knew
That's what you're into.
You and him
Him and you
If that's what
You're into
Him hanging 'round
Around you
You're hanging 'round
Yeah, you're there too.
And if you want me to
I will take off all my clothes for you
I will take off all my clothes for you
If that's what you're into
How 'bout him
In the nude?
If that's what
You're into.
In the nude in front of you
Is that what you'd wanna view?
If it's cool with you
I'll let you get naked too
It could be a dream come true
Providing that's what you are into
Is that what
You're into?
Him and you
In the nude?
That's what he's prepared to do
Is that the kind of thing you think you might be into?
And then maybe later
We get hot by the refrigerator
In the kitchen next to the pantry
You think that might be what you fancy?
In the buff
Being rude
Doing stuff
With the food
Getting lewd
With his food
We heard that's what you are into
Then on our next date
Well, you could bring your roommate
I don't know if Stu is keen to
But if you want we could double-team you
How about you
And two dudes?
Him, you and Stu
In the nude
Being lewd with two dudes with food
Well, that's if Stu's into it, too
All the things I'd do
The things I'd do for you
If I only knew
That's what you're into
But wait! There's more!
Okay, these guys have so many other hysterical videos I had to include a bonus. It was hard to pick, but this one is totally sick. Get ready for "She's So Hot (BOOM)".

In the nude
Being lewd with two dudes with food
Well, that's if Stu's into it, too
All the things I'd do
The things I'd do for you
If I only knew
That's what you're into
But wait! There's more!
Okay, these guys have so many other hysterical videos I had to include a bonus. It was hard to pick, but this one is totally sick. Get ready for "She's So Hot (BOOM)".

first of all, my apologies for the late posting. i was partying the new year up in NYC and haven't been near a computer since 2007 :)

i'd like to take this blog posting and start it off on a really upbeat, positive...optimistic, if you will, note. the past few weeks have been really crazy and a lot of things have happened...actually, that's the way it's been for the entire year of 2007. yet, despite whatever happens, things always seem to work out the way they're supposed to. that's what this song is about....that and hanging onto that feeling of relief, excitement, anticipation...
anyway, paramore is one of those bands that i have really gotten into in the last month for various reasons. they are really rockin! i really want to see them play live because their music is so full of energy, and that's what i feel when i'm just listening to them, so i can only imagine how great a live show would be, right? this song, hallelujah, is off of their sophomore album 'riot!' which is also a recent favorite of mine. there are many reasons for this past year for me to be screaming "hallelujah"...here are the highlights and some future anticipations:
2007
-finishing my first year of my master's degree
-getting to michfest for the 3rd time in a row
-passing my comprehensive exams for my master's degree
-figuring out a sweet research project for my master's degree
-reconnecting with old friends i lost touch with
-connecting with new friends that have proved to be immensely amazing (that's right, immensely amazing!)
-finding a much more different place to live that is much more better :)
2008
-finishing my thesis and hopefully getting a couple of articles to publish out of it
-presenting at a conference or two to get some other experiences in academia
-finishing my last year of my master's degree and getting to put a couple more letters after my name
-taking a break from academia and finding a "real" person job
-kicking some ass in indoor/outdoor kickball and mayhaps softball this summer
-thoroughly enjoying my new home w/my new roommate
-witnessing the most radical presidential election in the U.S...
so, with that, i'll stop here and just give a huge shout out to 2008 with this song! i really think this year is gonna be a really good one :)

for a rockin live video:
hallelujah::paramore
Somehow everything's gonna fall right into place,
If we only had a way to make it all fall faster everyday.
If only time flew like a dove,
We're gonna make it fly faster than I'm falling in love.
This time we're not giving up,
Let's make it last forever,
Screaming "Hallelujah".
We'll make it last forever.
Holding onto patience, wearing thin,
I can't force these eyes to see the end.
If only time flew like a dove,
Well we could watch it fly, and just keep looking up.
This time we're not giving up,
Let's make it last forever,
Screaming "Hallelujah".
We'll make it last forever.
And we've got time on our hands.
[And we've got time]
Got nothing but time on our hands.
Got nothing but, got nothing but.
[And we've got time]
Got nothing but time on our hands.
This time we're not giving up,
Oh, let's make it last forever,
Screaming "Hallelujah".

I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You :: Black Kids

I stumbled across Black Kids back in October; I read about their debut EP Wizard of Ahhhs online somewhere and was curious. Available only for free download off their website (and even before Radiohead), it was gettin' hyped up like nobody's business. A relatively new and unknown band getting press from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and almost every indie music blog I looked at? What?!?
Black Kids is living the dream! You know, the one where the little local band suddenly makes it big, gets Best New Music/Band accolades, travels to Europe...ah, the romance of it all, really! They formed in 2006 in Jacksonville, and released Wizard of Ahhhs this past August. Then - poof! - the band is performing at music festivals, tours, and takes a trip to Great Britain. And according to Wikipedia, they recently signed a management contract with the group that manages Bjork and Arcade Fire. That's one hell of a year.
I'm highlighting "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You", the third track out of four on the EP and my favorite. It is a poppy little tune chock full of group counting. Plus, it fulfills my love for synthy keyboards (I know, I know, it is cheesy but true).
When I listen to the EP, I feel like you can see the band belting it out in someone's garage drinking cheap beer or performing at a local battle of the bands festival, and I dig that sincerity. Probably because until recently, that is what they were doing. But then again, the sound isn't totally new. Hopefully, they'll have staying power - they have a whole lot of hype to live up to - and release a really surprising, well-produced album while the industry is still wild for them. In the meantime though, I like this song a lot, and I wish that I could be an overnight rockstar like Black Kids!!!
If you dig it, download the EP for free from http://www.blackkidsmusic.com
LYRICS:
You are the girl that I've been dreaming
of ever since I was a little girl.
One!
I'm biting my tongue.
Two!
He's kissin' on you.
Three!
Oh, why can't you see?
One! Two! Three! Four!
The word's on the streets and it's on the news:
I'm not gonna teach him how to dance with you.
He's got two left feet and he bites my moves.
I'm not gonna teach him how to dance! dance! dance! dance!
The second I do, I know we're gonna be through.
I'm not gonna teach him how to dance with you.
He don't suspect a thing. I wish he'd get a clue.
I'm not gonna teach him how to dance! dance! dance! dance!
One!
You're biting my tongue.
Two!
I'm kissin' on you.
Three!
Is he better than me?

Can I Get Get Get :: JUNIOR SENIOR

I'm tapping into my familial heritage, and celebrating all things Danish. Okay, so not really all things, just JUNIOR SENIOR.

To be honest, I had to do research to provide any information about JUNIOR SENIOR. While I had heard their band name, I didn't know the music at all. Just the other day, I was introduced to the song Can I Get Get Get, and was immediately hooked! Apparently, this duo out of Denmark (Jesper Mortensen and Jeppe Laursen) has been rockin' the cool kids in Europe and Japan with their hip-hop/pop/synthy sound for years. Jesper and Jeppe (love the names) formed JUNIOR SENIOR in 1998, and released their first album in 2003. Their second, and most recent, album Hey Hey My My Yo Yo has been out abroad since 2005, but was just released in North America in August. So, now we folks over here in the U.S. can start catching up to the craze. I guess they had a kickin' U.S. Fall tour, featuring guest appearances from J.D. from Le Tigre and Peaches.
So back to the song. Love it! Featuring J.D.'s vocals with the band, this song is chock full of whole lot of '80s synth craziness, some cowbell, and super poppy vocals. It's feel good and hysterical! I need to hear this whole album. The music video for this tune is just as yummy. According to the note at the start of the video, it is a compilation of film clips that people sent to the band. Who knows how much of it really came from fans and how much they created (J.D. makes an appearance, I'm guessing this was planned), but regardless, the video rocks. Showing everyone from a long haired guy in a basement, to Japanese girls, to a young man in an alley, to groups of wildly dressed teenagers wearing fanny packs, the video makes me was to, uh, get get get to know know know know you better better baby. The obviously cheeky, over-the-top quality kind of makes me feel like I am being pulled into an '80s and early '90s music video black hole.
My verdict: this song is feel-good all the way. So much so, in fact, that it might almost be obnoxious if overused. But I love it! When used in moderation, I think this song will rock my world for a good long time. See what you think for yourself. Even if you hate the song, at least the video will be good for a laugh.
Lyrics: Can I Get Get Get
Can I get get get to know know know you better better baby
(4x)
A baby girl in those baby pants
A come over here and take a second chance
Take a second chance on me
Cause I know you want to dance with me
But you say, I don't do that kind of thing
A say what, I don't do that kind of thing
A why not, I don't do that kind of thing
And you say, I don't do that kind of thing (okay)
Can I get get get to know know know you better better baby
Can I get get get to know know know you better baby
Can I get get get to know know know you better better baby
Can I get get get to know know know you better baby
A busy bee but I'm taking at ease
A let's go home and throw away the key
Away the key, are you coming with me
So fancy free, but hey
Out you say, I don't do that kind of thing
And you say, I don't do that kind of thing
A say what, I don't do that kind of thing
Hey, I don't do that kind of thing
Can I get get get to know know know you better better baby
Can I get get get to know know know you better baby
Can I get get get to know know know you better better baby
Can I get get get to know know know you better baby
I know you wanna dance
So come on and take a chance
Take a second chance on me
Cause I know you wanna dance
I know you wanna dance
So come on and take a chance
Take a second chance on me
Cause I know you wanna dance
Can I get get get to know know know you better better baby
Can I get get get to know know know you better baby
Can I get get get to know know know you better better baby
Can I get get get to know know know you better baby

No One :: Alicia Keys

so, this song goes out to me. i've recently felt really in love with myself. not in that self-absorbed, narcissistic way. but more of that, 'wow. i really like who i am and where i've come from, and who i've become, and who i'm growing into' sort of way. i'm really happy everyone! i really didn't think i'd be able to come out of that space where i walked around feeling hallow and like my heart was so heavy it sunk to my feet.

today has not been like this however. today rocked. for a few reasons: the apt hunt is going smoothly and i think me and my new roommate are gonna find a sweet home soon; i got a good review from my prof. on my book review that i wrote; i pondered a friends revelation that relationships are a lot of work and sometimes it's more than it's worth to stay in them; i wrote a sweet proposal for a paper that i'm presenting at a conference in february (that is a chapter of my thesis)...the list goes on. i had a great day today. but mostly because i was pondering a lot about what my friend was saying about relationships and why they end and how we deal, and i realized something...a couple of things.
first: relationships do take a lot of work and sometimes it can be easy to get caught up in doing the work to keep the relationship afloat so that you forget what it is that you're actually working for. i did this w/the lady. it's not that i didn't love her or anything like that...but i worked really hard to make our relationship work. we both did. it became a lot of work to keep us connected, to keep us close. it was super easy to romanticize how great the relationship was from afar because when we did get to see each other, it was usually good b/c of the anticipation that came with the month in between each visit. this sort of situation can be misleading. it can make you loose focus and sight and, more importantly, yourself - what's best for you, your partner, the relationship, etc. i did this. i put my partner and my relationship ahead of what was best for me and in doing so, i damaged it all...myself, the relationship, my partner. in order for a relationship to be healthy, all parties need to do what is best for each other, themselves, and their relationship. this is hard to do...it's a balancing act. there are times where you have to give more to one than the other, where you have to take less...but at the end of the day, if you can't stand firmly on your own two feet and feel ok where you're at, something is wrong. which leads me to my next point...
second: you gotta love yourself. seems pretty basic, i know...but it's true. if you can love yourself, you can't lose yourself. this is what i've learned. i've really been diggin on myself lately. throughout this entire grieving process of breaking up, i feel like i've done relatively well (it helps to have friends saying i'm doing well too...). i was a wreck when it first happened...i didn't know what to do with myself.
but now, after a lot of processing and talking and distracting myself from time to time with other things...i think i really like who i am now a lot better than who i was when i was in a relationship. i stopped doing things that made me happy, i stopped thinking about what it was that i wanted, and did things that were good for the lady and our relationship...i would freak out if things were going poorly for our relationship...now that i think about it, i spent a lot of time being paranoid that something would put our relationship in jeopardy...i stopped caring about myself in the way that would have been able to give me the self-confidence and security necessary to be stable in a relationship. i don't want to lose sight of this new-found clarity that i've happened upon.
so, i am taking this song and dedicating it to myself. for those of you who are more visual, picture me singing this song into the mirror. i am singing it to myself....as a reminder to stay true to myself, to not lose sight of who i am and all that i've been through, how far i've come, to become the person i am today...
this post is ungodly long, but i just had to!!! here you go:
no one::alicia keys
I just want you close
Where you can stay forever
You can be sure
That it will only get better
You and me together
Through the days and nights
I don't worry 'cuz
Everythings gonna be alright
People keep talking
They can say what they like
But all I know is everything's gonna be alright
No one no one no one
Can get in the way of what I'm feeling
No one no one no one
Can get in the way of what I feel for you
You you
Can get in the way of what I feel for you
When the rain is pouring down
And my heart is hurting
You will always be around
This I know for certain
You and me together
Through the days and nights
I don't worry cause
Everythings gonna be alright
People keep talking
They can say what they like
But all I know is everything's gonna be alright
No one no one no one
Can get in the way of what I'm feeling
No one no one no one
Can get in the way of what I feel for you
You you
Can get in the way of what I feel
I know some people search the world
To find something like what we have
I know people will try
Try to divide
Something so real
So till the end of time
I'm telling you that
No one no one no one
Can get in the way of what I'm feeling
No one no one no one
Can get in the way of what I feel for you
Oh oh oh...
sidenote: youtube is hilarious and you can find people singing to themselves too! this guy is actually pretty good...i liked it.
or you can find sweet little munchkins like this one...she makes me want babies bad one day.

I know some people search the world
To find something like what we have
I know people will try
Try to divide
Something so real
So till the end of time
I'm telling you that
No one no one no one
Can get in the way of what I'm feeling
No one no one no one
Can get in the way of what I feel for you
Oh oh oh...
sidenote: youtube is hilarious and you can find people singing to themselves too! this guy is actually pretty good...i liked it.

Where Does The Good Go :: Tegan and Sara

OK, so I know Meghan just posted a song by Tegan and Sara a few days ago and I know that there are millions of songs out there that I could post instead of this one, in the interest of musical diversity. But friends, I am absolutely and wholly obsessed. I went to Tegan and Sara's Columbus, OH concert this past Monday night and had fantastic time. Not only was Northern State (See Brenda's earlier blog entry) the opener, but the show was at the Newport, a historic rock hall in Cbus and it was PACKED with hundreds of screaming lesbians and Chuck Taylor-sporting emo guys. At any rate, while I knew a few Tegan and Sara songs prior to Monday, I was not entirely familiar with much of their music, so I spent some time Monday afternoon "prepping" myself for the big night.

While sitting in my cubicle at OSU and cruising the internet for free music, I came across this live performance of Tegan and Sara's song, "Where Does the Good Go." The performance is entirely acoustic - no mics even, but the video is steady and the sound is good. After hearing this version, I went hunting for the original electric version of the song, which although also fantastic, I don't like as well as this particular unplugged take. The video of the song, found at is also great because it includes some quirky commentary by the ladies themselves - before (and during - haha) the song. I love it. Check the harmonies. Tight as hell. Plus, it's an awesome break-up song :-)

"Where Does the Good Go"
Where do you go with your broken heart in tow
What do you do with the left over you
And how do you know, when to let go
Where does the good go, where does the good go
Look me in the eye and tell me you don't find me attractive
Look me in the heart and tell me you won't go
Look me in the eye and promise no love's like our love
Look me in the heart and unbreak broken, it won't happen
It's love that leaves and breaks the seal of always thinking you would be
Real, happy and healthy, strong and calm, where does the good go
Where does the good go
Where do you go when you're in love and the world knows
How do you live so happily while I am sad and broken down
What do you say it's up for grabs now that you're on your way down
Where does the good go, where does the good go
Peace out,
Sumnah

Call It Off :: Tegan & Sara

ok friends...this is another relationship blog, but come on...so much of my old music reminds me of my ex (the lady) and our relationship, so i figure the only way i'm gonna get through this is to just blog about the new music i've been listening to that has been helping me get over it, right?
so, back to how i'm super impatient and like to just make things better right NOW...
like i was saying last week, i've realized i can't be like this anymore. it's not healthy, nor is it right. heartache takes time to heal and so i've just go to stop rushing and let everything take its course. since i've been slowing down, i've realized that it's probably best to just cut off all ties and move on and take care of myself. this is something that's not very easy for me. i have a hard time letting go like this for a couple of reasons. first, because it's hard to just cut someone out of your life after they've been such a constant and significant presence for so many years. and second, because i second guess myself. i second guess whether or not i made the right choice...
enter: tegan & sara.
they have a new album out (the con) and it's probably my most favorite cd they've put outthus far. it has a decent flow to it, it's catchy, it makes me want to be in pop-rock band. this particular song (call it off) has been dear to me because it, in my opinion, captures the struggles of making difficult decisions as mentioned above.
the song is short, sweet, and rockin...and is all about what i was just talking about earlier. i really enjoy it and i feel that tegan & sara have really captured what your heart feels like when you're about to make such a difficult life choice. the guitar part is fast paced, and if you listen carefully, you'll hear the notes going back and forth from low to high, rapidly, sort of mimicking what one's heart does when facing a fork in the road. it sort of makes me feel a little anxious if i just listen to the guitar part, but then they bring you right back to where you need to be with the lyrics - thus making you grounded, but not without emotion. you feel like an emotional rollercoaster, but it's ok...it's normal. it's all a process, right?
anyway, take a look at this video/audio clip i got from youtube.com. it's sort of a weird video, but i wasn't able to find any decent clips of them playing this song. so, if it's too creepy, just listen and read along w/the lyrics.

i won't regret saying this
this thing that i'm saying
is it better than keepin my mouth shut?
that goes without saying
call break it off
call break my own heart
maybe i would've been somethin you'd be good at
maybe you would've been somethin i'd be good at
but now we'll never know
i won't be sad
but in case i go there
everyday, to make myself feel bad there's a chance
i start to wonder if this was the thing to do
i won't be out long
but i still think it better if
you take your time coming over here
i think that's for the best
call break it off
call break my own heart
maybe i would've been somethin you'd be good at
maybe you would've been somethin i'd be good at
but now we'll never know
i won't be sad
but in case i go there
everyday, to make myself feel bad there's a chance
i start to wonder if this was the thing to do
i start to wonder if this was the thing to do

Your Ex-Lover is Dead :: Stars

I was introduced to the band Stars earlier this semester, and I thought I'd continue the relationship theme that we've got going so far this week. This song is the first Stars song I had ever heard, and basically what happens is that these two people who were together a long time ago get introduced to each other through friends of friends and end up sharing a cab. The song as a whole is beautiful, but the last verse has some really beautiful lyrics. If you like the song, I suggest listening to Stars latest album, In Our Bedroom After the War. I'll probably be blogging about songs from that album sometime in the near-ish future either way.

I'm posting the music video for it, so enjoy!
"Your Ex-Lover Is Dead"
God that was strange to see you again
Introduced by a friend of a friend
Smiled and said 'yes I think we've met before'
In that instant it started to pour,
Captured a taxi despite all the rain
We drove in silence across Pont Champlain
And all of the time you thought I was sad
I was trying to remember your name...
This scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin
Tried to reach deep but you couldn't get in
Now you're outside me
You see all the beauty
Repent all your sin
It's nothing but time and a face that you lose
I chose to feel it and you couldn't choose
I'll write you a postcard
I'll send you the news
From a house down the road from real love...
Live through this, and you won't look back...
Live through this, and you won't look back...
Live through this, and you won't look back...
There's one thing I want to say, so I'll be brave
You were what I wanted
I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save...

Turn on Me :: The Shins

I've been a fan of the Shins for a few years now, but even I was surprised at how amazingly good their newest album ("Wincing the Night Away") is. The previous Shins albums were random bits of story-poems, while "Wincing the Night Away" is a brutal blow-by-blow of the singer's breakup with his ex-girlfriend. My favorite song on the album is "Turn on Me," which I connected with on a deeply emotional level. It's all about the pushing and pulling and heart-ripping-outing that we do as we try to redefine and redeclare our boundaries.
Be sure to read the lyrics, too! They are like balms rubbed on a raw wound.
"If you could just see yourself hating me, hating me... / When I've been so much more than fair..."
The last two lines of the song remind me of something I read in Everything is Illuminated: "Sometimes you are on the horse's back. And sometimes the horse is on your back." That line makes me smile even in the darkest times...

"Turn On Me"
You can fake it for a while,
Bite your tongue and smile,
Like every mother does an ugly child.
But the stars are leaking out,
Like spittle from a cloud,
Amassed resentment counting ounce and pound.
You're entertaining any doubt,
Because you had to know that I was fond of you,
Fond of Y-O-U,
Though I knew you masked your disdain.
I can see that change was just too hard for us,
Hard for us.
You always had to hold the reigns,
But where I'm headed, you just don't know the way.
So affections fade away,
And do adults just learn to play
The most ridiculous, repulsive games?
On the faith of ruddy sons,
And the double-barreled guns,
You better hurry,
Rabbit, run, run, run.
'Cause meeting you was fun,
And there's a lot of hungry howlers in this one cell.
We're taking it over,
Their brittle, thorny stems,
They break before they bend,
And neither one of us is one of them.
And the tails will never mend,
'Cause you had it in for me so long ago.
Boy, I still don't know,
I don't know why and I don't care,
Well, hardly anymore,
If you'd only seen yourself hating me.
Hating me,
When I've been so much more than fair.
But then you had to lay those feelings bare,
One thing I know still got you scared,
You're all that cold iron,
And never once aired of our dead.
You had to know that I was fond of you,
Fond of Y-O-U.
So I took your licks at the time,
And to change like that is just so hard to do,
Hard to do.
Don't let it whip-crack your life,
And bow out from the fight,
'Cause oh, how your sisters will write.
The worst part is over,
Now, get back on that horse and ride.
