Dancing in the Streets :: David Bowie and Mick Jagger

Is it me, or is Mick Jagger wearing Reebok Princess sneaks? Cuz those were my shoe of choice for grades 4-6. I think Bowie could have danced the blues even better if he was rockin the Princess sneaks. Now that I'm on the subject of Mr. Bowie, all I can say is that his trench-coat flutters like a nightingale's song at dusk. -Erika

Basement Bhangra Anthem :: DJ Rekha

I'm sorry I didn't post anything last week. I was pretty overwhelmed and excited and thrilled about the election results, and nothing I was thinking of posting seemed quite appropriate. Anyways. This week I've got something a little different than I usually post about, from DJ Rekha, who you can see on the right.
This is the title/first track off of DJ Rekha's cd "Basement Bhangra" and it's appropriately called "Basement Bhangra Anthem." DJ Rekha was born in London, lived in New Delhi for three years, then moved to Queens. She pretty much spearheaded the bhangra movement in NYC, blending bhangra, hip-hop and dancehall to create some really addictive dance music. She regularly hosts "Basement Bhangra" parties in NYC, so if you're ever in that part of the world, check those out.
Bhangra is a style of South Asian pop music that originated in India and Pakistan, rooted in Punjabi traditions. An easy way to distinguish bhangra from other types of Indian pop music is that bhangra features insistent rhythms played on the dhol, a two sided drum.

I'm Good, I'm Gone :: Lykke Li

today's song of the day is by an artist many of us have come to love since we were first introduced to this Swedish indie artist, Lykke Li, this past spring by Kim. well, ever since then, i've been slightly obsessed.
just this morning, as i was searching around for an artist to blog about, i came across this live session of Lykke Li's single "i'm good, i'm gone". i'm a huge fan of live, acoustic performances (duh), and this is what you get from this particular track - a live, acoustic performance. there's something that gives me tingles when you get to hear all the intricate details of an artist's voice and instrumentaling.
when i listened to this song, i thought about all the work that has been done to get out the vote and to help distribute the information about these upcoming elections. politics has been on my brain constantly for the last 6 months...and, in case you didn't know, we are all apart of this election. we all have a vital role - whether it is making sure we get ourselves out to the voting booths, helping to address ingorant, hateful rhetoric, volutneering our time to a local, state, or national campaign, encouraging a first time voter to do their homework, or hosting debate parties - we are all in this game and it's up to us to make sure this election is not a repeat of the last 8 years and 2 elections.
so, hopefully you'll enjoy this wonderful live rendition of another jammin Lykke Li song while you're working on getting out the vote!
GO OBAMA.
The end.
Love,
Meggo.
I'm Good, I'm Gone :: Lykke Li
Steppin', stormin'
I'm all gone
Give me a tone and I'm all gone
Yeah, I'm walkin' by the line
I hear that in my mind
I'm workin' a sweat
But it's all good
I'm breakin' my back
But it's all good
'cause I know I'll get it back
Yeah, I know your hands will clap
Yeah, I'm workin'
Yeah, I'm workin'
To make butter for my piece of bun
And if you say I'm not OK
Then that's the goal
If you say there ain't no way that I could know
If you say I aim too high from down below
Well, say it know 'cause when I'm gone...
You'll be callin' but I won't be at the phone
And you're hanging around 'til it's all done
You can't keep me back once I've had some
Wasting time to get it right
And you will see what I'm about
Yeah, I'm workin' a sweat
But it's all good
I'm breakin' my back
But it's all good
'cause I know I'll get it back
Yeah, I know your hands will clap
And if you say I'm not OK
Then that's the goal
If you say there ain't no way that I could know
If you say I aim too high from down below
Well, say it know 'cause when I'm gone...
You'll be callin' but I won't be at the phone

I don't need no nine mil glock
These hands are deadly guns
From smokin, drinkin, bein a thug
I sip hypnotyq from a coffee mug
I keep a healthy state of mind
I only drink and drive night
(Chorus)
I know Karate
I Know Jujitsu
I Drive Like a Gangsta when I'm coming to see you
And I'm coming to see you all the time
I Got a bottle of cheap jug wine
Pop some pills and make some love and try to recline
I like to drive into the sun
I like it when your sitting gun
My single is on, it's number one
I know Karate
I Know Jujitsu
I Drive Like a Gangsta when I'm coming to see you
i know Karate
I got some mojo
But holding hands aint something I do, thats true!
My best girl asked me if she's the only one
I gotta be blunt, I say
(everybody) Hell yeah!!!
enjoy!

i came across James when i was at work a couple of weeks ago and listening to pandora.com. this group is from england and has been around for quite some time (since 1981), but they are new to me. this particular song is off their 2001 album, pleased to meet you.
again...following the trend of the season, i feel like this particular song is fitting for summer. when i listened to it the first time, i immediately wished i was just chillin outside in a hammock, with a rum & coke in hand...just laying in the sun. that's what i wish i were doing right now actually...that would be nice...i also felt a similarity between James and Lykke Li, who we have blogged about a while back...these two musical acts fit well together...
anyway, this band has been together a long time, however, after this album was released, the lead singer, Tim Booth, quit the band....but then he got back together with them and is currently working on a new album w/the group!
hope y'all enjoy the song.
the end.
love,
meggo
(cool thing about this picture: it is a composite of all the band members faces! neat, huh?)
Fine :: James
I’m a boomerang
In the outback
Keep your throwing arm steady
So I get home
I’m a vampire bat
Out in shanghai
Haven’t eaten in four days
I’ve ordered in a chinese takeaway
I show more than I hide
I care more than I cry
I’m a phonograph baby
My wires are live
And I’m in crisscross
Fine. I feel fine.
I’m a fortune cookie
Full of cheap advice
I’m a suicide rookie
Blowing last call
Show more than I hide
Care more than I can cry
I’m a phonograph baby
My wires are live
And I’m in crisscross
Fine. I feel fine.

Dance, Dance, Dance :: Lykke Li
Having troubles telling how I feel
But I can dance, dance and dance
Couldn't possibly tell you how I mean
But I can dance, dance, dance
So when I trip on my feet
Look at the beat
The words are, written in the sand
When I'm shaking my hips
Look for the swing
The words are, written in the air
Dance
I was a dancer all along
Dance, dance, dance
Words can never make up for what you do
Easy conversations, there's no such thing
No I'm shy, shy, shy
My hips they lie 'cause in reality I'm shy, shy, shy
But when I trip on my feet
Look at the ground
The words are, written in the dust
When I'm shaking my hips
Look for the swing
The words are written in the air
Dance
I was a dancer all along
Dance, dance, dance
Words can never make up for what you do

Time Will :: Hercules and Love Affair

Last night the internet at my place of residence was being stubborn and refusing to work, so sorry I wasn't able to post yesterday.
Nonetheless, today I'll be sharing my most recent tasty musical find. Hercules and Love and Affair is a musical project from Brooklyn-based DJ Andy Butler. Butler started DJing when he 15 at a leather bar in Denver. (The proprietor went by the name "Chocolate Thunder Pussy") He moved to Brooklyn to go to school and has stayed in the NYC area since then. Hercules and Love Affair members include Nomi, Kim Ann Foxman and Antony Hegarty (of Antony and the Johnsons).
Butler's career as a DJ is clearly evident in Hercules and Love Affair. The songs tend to start basic and build into complex, shifting indie dance songs. The album is pretty excellent stuff to put on when cleaning, driving, organizing, cooking. I'd imagine you running types might enjoy it for that activity as well.
This track, "Blind," already has several remixes floating around the internet, so I've posted the longer version from the album itself and then the shorter youtube video version. It features Antony Hegarty, who has an extremely distinctive voice. One of my favorite parts is in the second half of the song, when this awesome muted trumpet line comes in.
Longer extended version of the song
As a child I knew
that the stars could only get brighter
then we would get closer
get closer
mmm mmm
As a child I knew
that the stars could only get brighter
then we could get closer
leaving this darkness
behind
Now that I'm older
the stars shed light upon my face
but when I found myself alone
find myself alone
Now that I'm older
the stars shed light upon my face
but when I found myself alone
I feel like I, I am blind
Feeling
Feeling
Feeling
Feeling
like I am blind
I wish the stars could shine now
For they are closer, they are near
But they will not present my presence
they will not present my presence
I wish the light could shine now
For it is closer, it is near
But it will not present my presence
And it makes my past and future painfully clear
To hear you now
To see you now
I can look outside myself
I must examine my breath
I look inside
ooooh
To hear you now
To see you now
I can look outside myself
I must examine my breath
and look inside
Because I feel blind
Because I feel blind
Feeling
Feeling

Anyway...
Ima Robot put out their first full length album in 2003 - but have been makin sweet sweet music since the late 90s. They've also toured with some rockin bands like Hot Hot Heat, and The Sounds (two groups we need to blog about soon!!!) which must have been super fun.
this particular tune comes from their second album Monument to the Masses, which was released in 2006. what is fun about this particular group is that their really diverse in terms of style - and they're funny. you can't go wrong with people that can make fun music that can also make you laugh and feel giddy and silly and....summery :)
so, enough with my talkin! get to jammin. hope y'all enjoy Ima Robot as much as i have been!
the end.
love,
meggo.
(video disclaimer: i tried my hardest to find a video/audio version of this song that was from the band, but after trying various audio/visual websites, this was the best thing i could come up with! so, hopefully this person's fun-times pictures will accompany the song in an exciting way!)
The Beat :: Ima Robot
Julie’s clocking out at the station
hurry up and get your pay
a two day vacation
Friday, Saturday
down in the basement
shower up in the sink
throw on some lipstick and
look pretty in pink
short skirts in the cold
to the club
oh the night is waiting
getting closer you feel it shaking
on the dance floor
this is the beat, the beat we fight to
this is the beat we live and die to
here’s to the kids that get it off
we work all week to sweat it off
this is the beat we beat the pressure
throwing away the world with pleasure
we’re working hard to burn it off
so dj won't you turn it up
beat beat, beat beat
beat beat, beat beat
julie's doing shots at the counter
thinking 'bout his great escape
from his stupid job telemarketing
but he never can shake the weight
a little tap on the shoulder
the prettiest girl in pink
"Oh no, I can’t dance," he told her
as she dragged him from his drink
freeze frame in the heat
she moved
oh and it’s close to shaking
so close but the crowd is breaking
on the dance floor
this is the beat, the beat we fight to
this is the beat we live and die to
here’s to the kids that get it off
we work all week to sweat it off
this is the beat to beat the pressure
throwing away the world with pleasure
we’re working hard to burn it off
so dj won’t you turn it up
and we can be for city boys
and summer girls who dream
just like the kids with chinese rocks
and beating hearts
thank you boys
make some noise
make some noise
this is the beat, the beat we fight to
this is the beat that we get high to
this is the beat, the beat we fight to
this is the beat we live and die to
this is the beat, the beat we fight to
this is the beat we live and die to
here's to the kids that get it off
we work all week to sweat it off
this is the beat to beat the pressure
throwing away the world with pleasure
we're working hard to burn it off
so dj won't you turn it off

Taking a cue from Dyl Pickle, this is the Apple iTunes free download. For this week. So, you can download it for free until tomorrow (probably). It's good! They've been playing it on the Current a lot, too.
What more can I say? I'm feeling pretty poorly, but this song made me feel a little less deathly.
What more can I say? I'm feeling pretty poorly, but this song made me feel a little less deathly.
Fed up with your indigestion.
Swallow words one by one.
Your folks got high a quarter to five.
Don’t you feel your growing up undone.
Nothing but the local DJ.
He said he had some songs to play.
What went down from this fooling around.
Gave hope and a brand new day.
Imagine all the girls,
Ah ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.
And the boys,
Ah ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.
And the strings,
Eee, eee, eee, eee, eee, eee, eee, eee.
And the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums.
Oh
Nothing was the same again.
All about where and when.
Blowing our minds in our lives unkind.
Gotta love the bpl.
When the smoke was all baton
Remember how this all begun.
We wore his love like a hand in a glove.
Where the future plays it all night long.
Imagine all the girls,
Ah ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.
And the boys,
Ah ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.
And the strings,
Eee, eee, eee, eee, eee, eee, eee, eee.
And the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums
Making all the girls.
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.
And the boys,
Ah ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.
And the strings,
Eee, eee, eee, eee, eee, eee, eee, eee.
And the drums,
Ah ah ah ah, ah, ah, ah, oh.
All the girls
Ah ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.
And the boys,

I've liked Goldfrapp in the past for incredibly sultry dance music, especially Ooh La La and Ride a White Horse.
It seems like no one can talk about the new Goldfrapp without contrasting it to the old Goldfrapp and making a big deal of "how different" Seventh Tree is, but I say it's not that big of a departure. Sure, it's not the same pulsing electro-pop that I crank before I go dancing and makes me wish I wasn't too scared to take Ecstasy, but the synth stuff is still there.
Let's talk about the video for a minute here. It's almost like the band is even acknowledging the new direction they've taken with a video motif that's less industrial or electronic than they've used in the past. Here we have Alison singing by herself in the middle of the woods in a flowy white tunic on a gorgeous fall day--the more natural and organic elements seem to be a visual recognition of the new toned-down and organic sound. Again, I would say there's more of a mixing of old and new here. It's not the kind of video we're used to seeing from them, but there's still that Goldfrapp quirkiness that we love so much. Alison doesn't come riding in a horse made from a mirrored disco ball like she does in Ooh La La, but she is being worshipped in the woods by a horde of leaf-people, for Chrissake.

What gets me about A & E is that it really gives Alison Goldfrapp a chance to show off her pretty impressive range. This is different from the band's earlier stuff, but I would say it's a welcome change. The classic Goldfrapp kind of kept her voice in one end of the scale for an entire song, probably because that kind of repetition lends itself well to decent dance pop. In A&E, she sings these warm low tones in the verses but still gets into the high-energy falsetto in the chorus and builds into a pretty powerful bridge and ending. The electronic junk even makes a good play at this point; but instead of pounding into your skull and forcing you to dance your ass off, it makes you lean forward and just listen a little harder.
A&E::Goldfrapp
It's a blue, bright blue Saturday, ay, ay
And the pain has started to slip away, ay, ay
I'm in a backless dress on a pastel ward, the shining.
Think I want you still
But it may be pills at work
Do you really wanna know how I was dancing on the floor?
I was trying to fool you when I'm crawling up the door
And theres a tune at things you say that you don't do
Why don't you ring?
I was feeling lonely, feeling low
Feeling like I needed you
Like I'm waking up surrounded by me

For this particular post,
I was inspired by the depth to which pieces of
music have resonated with all of the bloggers, and the way these songs are
now integral and representative of phases in their lives. I had a moment today, sitting in a coffee shop, listening to Ani's 'Subdivision' and reading Gitfiddler's response for last Sunday's blog, when this song came on and nostalgia hit me full in the chest.
This song, for me,
is representative of a time in my life that is now almost over. A time in my life when I made many discoveries about myself and my relationship to those around me through the practice and creation of dance. This song represents a very specific phrase of movement in a very specific class, during a very specific semester, but what I didn't realize until today was that this song now represents to me something deeper, broader, more profound.
Dancing with a group of people can be a very bonding experience in any case,
but this work, in particular, forced a kind of trust very quickly and emotionally ripped you apart simply by it's voluminous and exhausting athleticism. Pushing your body beyond its physical limit, while working in tandem with and manipulating other bodies, is a life altering moment that leaves you emotionally bare and raw and discombobulated. (I know that sounds ridiculously corny, but if you've ever ran a marathon, played in some type of intense championship sports match, you understand.) We always did this particular choreography to this song, whic is now forever linked in my brain to that experience.
I hope y'all enjoy this song for its sheer beauty and fluidity, as well as their crazy Icelandic language. Sigur Ros' still unclassifiable musical stylings have reached a wide international audience and allowed them to work with groups like Radiohead and TV shows like PBS' Planet Earth. i first came across this song last week when dyl-pickle told me he was listening to them...
because quaking aspen made him a cd with them on it...and i was instantly hooked. this is the first song that i heard when i went to their myspace page.
there are 3 reasons (ok there are more, but i decided to limit myself to 3) why i love this band/music video/song.
1. the lead singer is a woman who wears vintage, 70's style, short dresses and fuck me boots (sometimes) and colored tights...AND she plays the bass...really, really, really nice looking...bass guitars ;) ;) ;P

2. this music video is HILARIOUS. at first you might be a little weirded out, but if you keep watching it all the way through, you will not be disappointed. i like it when musicians have a sense of humor...and i like that these people get down in their own funky way to groove to the beat. it gives me hope that people will just put their hands in the air, and shake 'em like they just don't care.

3. i love how simple this song is. there's a bass, a keybord, a drum kit, and a voice. and it still make me wanna get up and dance around...mostly by myself, in my bedroom, and in my underwear, but nonetheless, it gets me movin....plus she says things like this:
yes that is what i mean
that's the nail that i hit
i try to be as coy as i can
but i wanna see your naughty bit
i mean...come on. this song rocks, right?
happy tuesday everyone. get your bodies movin to this groovin.
peace.
polite dance song::the bird and the bee
give it up for me please
put your hands in the air
if you know what's good for you
you wanna shake it like you just don't care
would you please clap your hands
now get up on your feet
i beg of you to get up and dance
it's such a crazy kick ass beat
pardon me
the music is moving
moving from left to right
apologies
for losing my cooling
losing the day to night
since i'm asking so nice
would you just entertain
there's nothing left to hide you away
just show a little bit of brain
yes that is what i mean
that's the nail that i hit
i try to be as coy as i can
but i wanna see your naughty bit
would you please, would you please
would you, would you please
(apologies)
would you please, would you please
would you, would you please
(apologies)
would you please, would you please
would you, would you please
(apologies)
would you please, would you please
would you, would you please clap your hands
(apologies)
pardon me
the music is moving
moving from left to right
apologies
for losing my cooling
losing the day to night
would you be nasty with me
do you like dancing with me
i think we have a very special quality
i want to show it to you
i want to grow it with you

One Word (Chris Cox Club Edit) :: Kelly Osbourne

Maybe this has happened to you before- you're sitting in your car, listening to the radio, when a really catchy, fun song comes on. You start bopping your head, getting really into it... and then you realize that is an anti-smoking PSA. Or an ad for Diet Mountain Dew. Or it is a song by someone that you never really thought of as a legitimate artist, like Kelly Osbourne. But you like the song a lot.
That's what happened when I went to Chicago last summer with some friends. My friend put in his clubbin' techno mix, and this song was on it. I really, really rocked out to it, and was SHOCKED to learn in was Kelly Osbourne. I especially like when she sings: "It's not the way that I want it... It's just the way that I NEED it day after day..." I sing those lines to myself sometimes, just to reinforce some stuff that needs to happen in my head.
This is the Chris Cox edit of the song, which makes a huge difference. Cox is pretty kickin'. I would recommend turning the volume up loud and just dancing to this song.
One word breaks the code of silence,
Silence tells me all I need to know.
One Word,
One Word, tells me everything I need to know.
One word driven in to madness,
Madness driven by the depths below.
One Word,
One Word, tells me everything I need to know
[chorus]
It's not the way that I want it,
It's just the way that I need it.
Day after day
It's not the way that I want it,
It's just the way that I need it.
Day after day
One lie tells a thousand stories,
The greatest stories that were ever told.
One Lie,
One Lie, tells the greatest stories ever told.
One man can predict the future,
a future journey in to outer space.
One Man,
One Man, a future journey in to outer space.
[chorus 2x]
