From a Distance :: Bette Midler

i totally forgot to post yesterday. crap! but hopefully this post will do one of two things (hopefully simultaneously): make you laugh; creep you out.

so i started a new job at a private, catholic 4 year university. and on many an occasion, this song has popped up in my head, or has been brought to my attention via kelsey - specifically the following lyrics:

god is watching us god is watching us god is watching us...from a distance

i really do love my job, and working at this institution has proved to be fulfilling and challenging...but this song totally creeps me out.

so, to celebrate the season of being creeped out, i thought i'd celebrate october 1st by creeping the rest of you out.

From a Distance :: Bette Midler

From a distance the world looks blue and green,
And the snow-capped mountains white.
From a distance the ocean meets the stream,
And the eagle takes to flight.

From a distance, there is harmony,
And it echoes through the land.
Its the voice of hope, its the voice of peace,
Its the voice of every man.

From a distance we all have enough,
And no one is in need.
And there are no guns, no bombs, and no disease,
No hungry mouths to feed.

From a distance we are instruments
Marching in a common band.
Playing songs of hope, playing songs of peace.
Theyre the songs of every man.
God is watching us. God is watching us.
God is watching us from a distance.

From a distance you look like my friend,
Even though we are at war.
From a distance I just cannot comprehend
What all this fighting is for.

From a distance there is harmony,
And it echoes through the land.
And its the hope of hopes, its the love of loves,
Its the heart of every man.

Its the hope of hopes, its the love of loves.
This is the song of every man.
And God is watching us, God is watching us,
God is watching us from a distance.
Oh, God is watching us, God is watching.
God is watching us from a distance.

Yael Naim :: New Soul

sorry again for the late posting folks! it was a busy president's day weekend (and also the weekend that i celebrated the day of my birth exactly 25 years ago!!!!), so i hope you all enjoy the song i came across today as i was looking for a happy song to blog about. i found this one to be quite catchy so here goes... Naim is a french-israeli singer and songwriter who is relatively new to the "official" music scene w/her first album (in a man's womb) released in 2001. You can listen to more music of hers HERE. i really enjoy her thus far, and she has this sort of regina spektor appeal about her, but in a less abrasive manner. as far as this particular song is concerned, i really enjoy it's lightness...it's light weight...calorie free if you will. it just makes me feel like i'm riding my bike down a really big hill, feeling the breeze go across my face and just feelin care-free. this is how i feel after another year on this earth. this weekend, i celebrated my 25th birthday with my roommate, my girlfriend, and some other close friends. and as i begin my first week being a quarter of a century old, i enter it feeling refreshed, alive, and feelin rather content....and this song is helping me glide into another year of growth, learning, and love.

so, i hope you enjoy it as much as i do!
the end.
<3, meggo.

Yael Naim::New Soul

I'm a new soul.
I came to this strange world hoping I could learn a bit ‘bout how to give and take.
But since I came here...felt the joy and the fear.....finding myself making every possible mistake.

la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la...

I'm a young soul in this very strange world hoping I could learn a bit ‘bout what is true and fake.
But why all this hate?
Try to communicate.
Finding trust and love is not always easy to make.

la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la...

This is a happy end.
'course you don't understand.
Everything you have done......
why's everything so wrong?

This is a happy end.
Come and give me your hand.
I'll take you far away.

I'm a new soul I came to this strange world hoping I could learn a bit ‘bout how to give and take. But since I came here…..felt the joy and the fear…..finding myself making every possible mistake.

la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la...

la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la....

Title of the Song :: Da Vinci's Notebook

i came across this song after about a 4 year hiatus this past weekend when i was road tripping to the shenandoah mountains in va for the weekend (to sit at her boss's condo and work on my thesis...lame!!!) before we left, i grabbed a bunch of old cds i had burned in college and popped one in.

when this song came on, i got super excited. my roommate, on the other hand, was not nearly as impressed w/it as i was....but whatever. i think this song is hilarious. basically, it's a bunch of dudes singing the formula to all boy-band pop songs. it is hilarious. i hope you all enjoy it. for anyone out there than enjoys nerdy music terminology, you will enjoy this song...especially my favorite part/line....which is bolded.

Title of the Song::Da Vinci's Notebook

Declaration of my feelings for you
Elaboration on those feelings
Description of how long these feelings have existed
Belief that no one else could feel the same as I
Reminiscence of the pleasant times we shared
And our relationship's perfection
Recounting of the steps that led to our love's dissolution
Mostly involving my unfaithfulness and lies
Penitent admission of wrongdoing
Discovery of the depth of my affection
Regret over the lateness of my epiphany

Title of the song
Naïve expression of love
Reluctance to accept that you are gone
Request to turn back time
And rectify my wrongs
Repetition of the title of the song

Enumeration of my various transgressive actions
Of insufficient motivation
Realization that these actions led to your departure
And my resultant lack of sleep and appetite
Renunciation of my past insensitive behavior
Promise of my reformation
Reassurance that you still are foremost in my thoughts now
Need for instructions how to gain your trust again
Request for reconciliation
Listing of the numerous tasks that I'd perform
Of physical and emotional compensation

Title of the song
Naïve expression of love
Reluctance to accept that you are gone
Request to turn back time
And rectify my wrongs
Repetition of the title of the song

Acknowledgment that I acted foolishly
Increasingly desperate pleas for your return
Sorrow for my infidelity
Vain hope that my sins are forgivable
Appeal for one more opportunity
Drop to my knees to elicit crowd response
Prayers to my chosen deity
Modulation and I hold a high note...

Title of the song
Naïve expression of love
Reluctance to accept that you are gone
Request to turn back time
And rectify my wrongs
Repetition of the title of the song

Brand New Key :: Melanie

i am addicted to this song. i heard it for the first time this past week when i was driving to my grandparents house in the middle of a snow storm to have 'christmas' with my family.

at first, i couldn't tell if i liked it because it broke the jesusy christmas music streak that the radio station was playing. but then, about half way through it, i realized i enjoyed it because it was a fun, fun song :) it's just one of those songs that make you wanna get up and move around and dance all funny like. it makes me wish i had a pair of roller skates or something...

here's a live recording of melanie performing the song. if you look on youtube, you can see a bunch of fun cartoons/homemade videos

the end.
love,
meghan
p.s. happy holigays, merry christmas, etc.

Brand New Key::Melanie
I rode my bicycle past your window last night
I roller skated to your door at daylight
It almost seems like you're avoiding me
I'm okay alone, but you got something I need

Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out you see
I been looking around awhile
You got something for me
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key

I ride my bike, I roller skate, don't drive no car
Don't go too fast, but I go pretty far
For somebody who don't drive
I been all around the world
Some people say, I done all right for a girl

Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out you see
I been looking around awhile
You got something for me
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key

I asked your mother if you were at home
She said, yes .. but you weren't alone
Oh, sometimes I think that you're avoiding me
I'm okay alone, but you've got something I need

Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out to see
La la la la la la la la, la la la la la la
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
