Heroes :: David Bowie

Hi folks! I've been a bit lame and out of the loop lately, so today I'll put forth one of my "golden oldies:" "Heroes" by David Bowie. This is one of Bowie's more understated, less-danceable songs, but for whatever reason, it reaches something inside of me and pulls. Hard.

So here's the song:

I
I will be king
And you
You will be queen
Though nothing will
Drive them away
We can beat them
Just for one day
We can be Heroes
Just for one day

And you
You can be mean
And I
I'll drink all the time
'Cause we're lovers
And that is a fact
Yes we're lovers
And that is that

Though nothing
Will keep us together
We could steal time
Just for one day
We can be Heroes
For ever and ever
What d'you say

I
I wish you could swim
Like the dolphins
Like dolphins can swim
Though nothing
Will keep us together
We can beat them
For ever and ever
Oh we can be Heroes
Just for one day

I
I will be king
And you
You will be queen
Though nothing
Will drive them away
We can be Heroes
Just for one day
We can be us
Just for one day

I
I can remember
Standing
By the wall
And the guns
Shot above our heads
And we kissed
As though nothing could fall
And the shame
Was on the other side
Oh we can beat them
For ever and ever
Then we can be Heroes
Just for one day

We can be Heroes
We can be Heroes
We can be Heroes
Just for one day
We can be Heroes
We're nothing
And nothing will help us
Maybe we're lying
Then you better not stay
But we could be safer
Just for one day

For extra Bowie fun, you should check out his 1970s movie [biopic?] "The Man Who Fell to Earth," as well as the "Bowie in Space" send-up by Flight of the Conchords. I would embed these things here for you, but I can't get to YouTube presently...

Brand New Key :: Melanie

i am addicted to this song. i heard it for the first time this past week when i was driving to my grandparents house in the middle of a snow storm to have 'christmas' with my family.

at first, i couldn't tell if i liked it because it broke the jesusy christmas music streak that the radio station was playing. but then, about half way through it, i realized i enjoyed it because it was a fun, fun song :) it's just one of those songs that make you wanna get up and move around and dance all funny like. it makes me wish i had a pair of roller skates or something...

here's a live recording of melanie performing the song. if you look on youtube, you can see a bunch of fun cartoons/homemade videos

the end.
love,
meghan
p.s. happy holigays, merry christmas, etc.

Brand New Key::Melanie
I rode my bicycle past your window last night
I roller skated to your door at daylight
It almost seems like you're avoiding me
I'm okay alone, but you got something I need

Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out you see
I been looking around awhile
You got something for me
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key

I ride my bike, I roller skate, don't drive no car
Don't go too fast, but I go pretty far
For somebody who don't drive
I been all around the world
Some people say, I done all right for a girl

Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out you see
I been looking around awhile
You got something for me
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key

I asked your mother if you were at home
She said, yes .. but you weren't alone
Oh, sometimes I think that you're avoiding me
I'm okay alone, but you've got something I need

Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out to see
La la la la la la la la, la la la la la la
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
