Falling Slowly :: Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova

Every now and then I hear a song that not only cuts deeply into my unsuspecting personage, but then fills up the spaces in me like yummy hot soup. "Falling Slowly" is one of those songs. It helps that I saw it in the preview for the movie that birthed the recording and so I had the context of the story which also cut me deeply.

(They're playing in a music store because Irglova's character doesn't own a piano so the store lets her practice there :)

These are clips from the movie "Once" which is about a busker in Dublin who meets a street-vending Czech woman who is moved by his songs. In the course of a week they write and record a handful of songs together. Each has just experienced a major breakup and finds solace and healing in the music that they're able to create together. The premise might sound cheesy, but it's beautifully and subtly pulled off. Plus it's littered with fabulous songs that pop out of the middle of the story so it's more like a musical than anything. For the love of God, go see this movie!!!

In real life, Glen Hansard is the former frontman of the band "The Frames" and was asked by the director John Carney (former bassist of "the Frames") to write all the music long before he was asked to play the leading role. That was decided after it became clear that it was more important for the film to have great musicians who could sorta act than great actors who could sorta sing and sorta play. Because of this, the whole film is gathered around the music that keeps the characters and the story warm. Glen Hansard even admits that it was a bit of a challenge treating Marketa Irglova like a stranger since they've been friends for years in real life. They've both said that one of the things they like best about the movie is that it captures their friendship in a bottle while telling a wonderful story that the rest of the world can relate to. I know this kinda film isn't everyone's cuppa tea, but go see it and tell me what you think!

Fave lines (from Falling Slowly):

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing along
